The Wadsworth Center, the nation’s premier state public health research laboratory, is recruiting for a Tandem Mass Spectrometry Laboratory Director for the Newborn Screening Program (NBSP). The New York State NBSP (https://www.wadsworth.org/programs/newborn/screening) is one of the leading programs in the world and was the first to implement tandem mass spectrometry screening for lysosomal disorders and adrenoleukodystrophy. This position includes research to develop and validate new tests and technologies that are currently under consideration for the nationally recommended uniform screening panel. The successful applicant will provide programmatic oversight of the administration and operation of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, which is responsible for high-throughput screening for more than 40 metabolic disorders. This position will oversee adherence to regulatory requirements, maintenance of advanced liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) instrumentation and methods, as well as continuous quality improvement based on data and program priorities. In addition, the incumbent will ensure accurate result reporting, apply for extramural funding, and write manuscripts.
The Wadsworth Center (www.wadsworth.org) is the country’s most comprehensive state public health laboratory with a staff of about 700, that includes over 100 doctoral level scientists. The Center includes both state-of-the art clinical testing laboratories and a dynamic research environment focused on diseases caused by genetic, infectious, and environmental agents and their impact on human health.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
A doctorate in the natural sciences and three years of professional research experience in an appropriate field: or a master’s degree in a natural science and five years of such experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related degree. American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Board certified or eligible in Biochemical Genetics or holder of a NYS Certificate of Qualification in Biochemical or Genetic Testing is preferred. Experience in management, LC-MS/MS and clinical or newborn screening laboratory (ies) is also preferred.
