The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) - Regina Integrated Service Area is seeking a full-time Clinical Biochemist/Doctoral Scientist (1.0 FTE) to join the Division of Biochemistry and Toxicology, Department of Laboratory Medicine. This full-time position is based in Regina, Saskatchewan’s capital city, will serve all clinical sites in Regina Integrated Service Area (RISA) and support biochemistry services within the SHA. The successful candidate will join a group of laboratory professionals with diverse clinical and scientific expertise in provision of laboratory services that includes acute and outpatient services at the Regina General Hospital, Pasqua Hospital and Regina’s Urgent Care Centre as well as Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory that offers specialized screening and high-volume reference diagnostic testing for the entire province of Saskatchewan.
The Regina Laboratory Medicine Department includes biochemists, microbiologists, hematopathologists, forensic pathologists and anatomic pathologists as well as a forensic toxicologist and a molecular geneticist. This breadth of coverage supports Regina’s collaborative approach to delivery acute and community laboratory services at both local and provincial levels. Provincial programs include toxicology, specialized endocrinology, immunology, maternal serum screening, newborn screening, biochemical genetics, sexual transmitted blood borne infection (STBBI) screening, oncological screening and point of care testing. Furthermore, Regina’s two hospital sites are currently the sole sites accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) within the province of Saskatchewan.
Regina Laboratory Medicine is affiliated with the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. The Department has an accredited General Pathology residency training program, Clinical Biochemistry fellowship training program and provides training/teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and post\-doctoral levels, and training for medical laboratory technologists and assistants. This affiliation affords the successful applicant opportunities for academic responsibilities that may include teaching in the General Pathology Residency, Clinical Biochemistry fellowship training program, other Medical Education programs, and collaborative/independent research. The successful candidate is eligible for a faculty appointment with the University of Saskatchewan.
Responsibilities
Maintain high standards of quality required for CAP accreditation through auditing performance in internal and external quality assurances, key performance indicators, identifying root causes and corrective actions for unacceptable performance.
Bring expertise in developing and monitoring total quality system for a comprehensive test menu across the Regina Integrated Health Region.
Consult with physicians and other allied health care providers regarding the appropriate selection, timely reporting and interpretation of laboratory tests for their patients.
Support interpretation of special chemistry tests including serum and urine protein electrophoresis, mass spectrometry-based toxicology and endocrine testing, tests for autoimmune diseases, and participate in on-call services and referral consultations.
Play a leadership role in recommending and selecting new technology, equipment, test methods as well as performing evaluation, validation and implementation.
Act as an in-house resource person for medical and scientific staff, technologist and support personnel for preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical by promoting total lab automation.
Collaborate with medical, operational and regulatory affairs staff to foster quality improvement and maintain the accreditation standards, like CAP, and promote standardization across the province.
Work closely with the healthcare partners, including provincial lab medicine subspecialties, Saskatchewan Health Authority, the College of Physician and Surgeon of Saskatchewan, to ensure appropriate and timely quality of diagnostic services and care to the patient.
The academic responsibilities may include teaching General Pathology Residents, Clinical Chemistry Fellows (program initiated in fall 2024), other Medical Resident and Student Programs, and collaborate in clinical research. The successful candidate will be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment with the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine.

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree with formal training in Clinical Chemistry and be certified (or eligible for certification) in Clinical Chemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry and/or the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC).
