JOB OVERVIEW
General Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for managing day-to-day high complexity testing operations, ensuring regulatory compliance to CLIA, staff competency, and accurate result reporting.
The key duties of the general laboratory supervisor include but are not limited to monitoring quality control, training of personnel, performing competency assessments, and providing technical support to technical staff.
General laboratory supervisor may participate in the execution of technical operations when trained on process/methods.
General laboratory supervisor is required to be accessible during testing hours and maintain and ensure strict conformance to quality standards is being implemented and followed.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary duties and responsibilities of the general laboratory supervisor include but are not limited to:
Regulatory compliance: maintaining and ensuring adherence to CLIA requirements, internal quality management systems and any accreditation body requirements.
Personnel Management: develop and be responsible for personnel training programs/plans, execute required training for personnel, basic supervision of personnel on day-to-day basis.
Operational Oversight: manage daily laboratory workflows based on volume of samples and personnel availability including sample accessioning and inspection, sample processing, quality control metrics, and meeting business and quality metrics such as turn-around time, number of deviations etc.
Quality Assurance: participate in the initiation, investigate, root cause analysis, correction and tracking and trending of non-conforming products; identify and implement quality metrics required around non-conforming product trends. Participate in initiation, investigation, corrections related to planned and un-planned deviations, CAPA’s, and recalls. Compile data when required for the support and presentation of metrics at Management Review.
Technical Support: act as a liaison for the laboratory director, providing on-site, phone and or electronic support during testing.
Delegated responsibilities: Laboratory Director or technical supervisor may delegate the following responsibilities in addition to your primary duties:
o Assuring all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications;
o Reviewing and ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning;
o Providing orientation to all testing personnel;
o Evaluation and documentation of personnel competency testing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for General Laboratory Supervisor include:
Education: One of the following must be met:
o Doctoral, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; AND with at least 2 years of clinical laboratory training or experience in a high complexity testing environment;
OR
o Associates degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science; AND includes at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that at a minimum, includes either (1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND with at least 2 years of clinical laboratory training or experience in a high complexity testing environment;
OR
o Grandfather Provision where individual were qualified and serving as a general supervisor in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously to remain qualified.
Experience: 1-3 years of experience in a high-complexity laboratory setting dependent on degree as defined above.
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Personal qualifications of the General Laboratory Supervisor include but are not limited to:
Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) expertise
Strong organizational and communication skills
Strong management skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
General laboratory supervisor physical demands may include but not be limited to:
Mobility: Extensive periods of time spent standing and walking during daily operations; long durations of time may be spent at a computer.
Lifting and Handling: Lifting, pushing or pulling items which weigh between 20-50 pounds; stooping, bending, and reaching overhead at times and repetitively.
Dexterity and Sensory: High proficiency in using computer systems, laboratory instrumentation and equipment; strong visual acuity and auditory skills are required for monitoring safety and testing interruptions, notifications.
Environmental: potential to exposure to hazardous materials, including biological fluids, infectious disease, chemical fumes and oxygen deprivation.
POSITION DEMANDS
General laboratory supervisor position demands include but are not limited to:
Technical Expertise: high technical expertise and knowledge of internal quality system requirements are required for the general laboratory supervisor
Accessibility: On-site, phone and electronic accessibility is required for the general laboratory supervisor in order to ensure technical staff are supported with technical problems and issues.
Operational Oversight: strong skills are needed operationally to ensure day-to-day operations of the laboratory, prioritization and completion of tasks including maintenance of equipment, proficiency testing, management of staff and delegated duties. Clear communication is required for management of staff and presentation of laboratory metrics at management review meetings.
Salary Range: $ 85-105k depending on qualifications and experience
